Golf & Safari Essentials

Book Tee Times Early

Top courses like Leopard Creek, Fancourt Links, and Pearl Valley book up fast. Secure tee times and caddies well in advance.

Pack Smart

Bring lightweight clothing for warm days, a jacket for cool safari mornings, and smart-casual outfits for dining. Neutral colours are best for game drives. Many lodges offer laundry, so pack light.

Safari in Style

Choose private lodges for luxury touches like fine dining, expert guides, and exclusive game drives. Bring binoculars and a good camera to capture the Big Five.

Explore the Winelands

The Cape Winelands offer world-class vineyards and restaurants. Consider private tastings, cellar tours, or chef’s table experiences at estates like Babylonstoren or Delaire Graff.

Hidden Gems Beyond the Icons

Don’t just stop at Cape Town and Kruger. Explore the Garden Route, Drakensberg Mountains, and KwaZulu-Natal beaches for incredible scenery and fewer crowds.

Travel Practicalities

WHEN TO VISIT
South Africa is a year-round golf destination, but conditions vary by region. Cape Town and the Winelands have warm, dry summers and cooler, wetter winters, while the north-eastern safari regions generally have dry, mild winters and warmer summer rainfall. Spring and autumn are particularly attractive for golf tours combining several regions.

Getting Around

Cities: Uber works well. For flexibility, rent a car — but remember, driving is on the left-hand side. For seamless luxury, consider chauffeurs, helicopters, or private charters.

HEALTH & TRAVEL PRECAUTIONS
Health requirements depend on where you are travelling from and which parts of South Africa you will visit. Travellers arriving from certain yellow-fever-risk countries may need a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. Malaria precautions may also be recommended when visiting malaria-risk areas, including parts of the Kruger region. Check current official travel-health guidance and consult your doctor or travel clinic before departure.

TIPPING
A 10–15% restaurant tip is customary when service is not already included. For golf caddies, guides, drivers and safari lodge staff, gratuities vary according to the service provided. Many lodges provide their own recommended gratuity guidelines.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi is common in hotels and lodges, but safaris are about switching off. For peace of mind, keep a local SIM card or rely on your host/concierge for arrangements.

Cultural & Lifestyle Insights

Stay Safe & Street Smart

Stick to well-known areas, avoid walking alone at night in cities, and use Uber or private transfers. Keep valuables discreet and follow local advice.

FOOD & WATER
Municipal tap water is generally safe in South Africa's major urban areas, although local conditions can vary. Follow the advice of your hotel or lodge where appropriate. South Africa is also known for excellent restaurants, wine, seafood and regional cuisine.

Cultural Respect

South Africa is diverse, with 12 official languages. English is widely spoken. A friendly “Howzit?” (hello) or learning a few Zulu/Xhosa words shows respect. Always ask before photographing people.

ENTRY & CUSTOMS IN 2026
From 1 July 2026, travellers entering or leaving South Africa are required to complete the South African Traveller Declaration for customs purposes. We recommend completing it online before travel and checking the latest official entry requirements before departure.

TRAVEL WITH LOCAL EXPERTISE
A South African golf tour involves more than simply booking tee times. We coordinate golf, accommodation, safari experiences and other activities around your group's dates and preferences, with local support throughout your tour.
